Introduction – The Dilemma
Sunday, March 1st, 2009
So I’ve got a dilemma, here’s a scenario for you:-
There is a room next door with a group of aspiring music producers wanting to know how to make it in the music industry.
I’ve been asked to talk to them about my own personal experiences and in half an hour I will be sharing stories and advising on what they could do to “make it” in the industry.
A question runs through my mind.
Do I:-
(1) Reel the “always follow your dreams and never give up” spiel, encouraging them to pursue their hearts desire and eventually if they try hard enough they will “make it“.
OR
(2) Tell them how the industry actually works compared to how it is perceived and explain that if they are willing to swallow the reality pill they’re far more likely to be successful in their endeavours, however, it may not necessarily involve music directly.
I am presuming option (2) may not make me popular, perhaps dampen a few spirits in the room and quite possibly make me out as a bitter fool who with a score to settle – won’t retreat quietly to my sad little shelter but instead decides to carry out a revenge attack on others by ‘treating’ them to my ill advice.
Option (1) on the other hand is far more attractive and positively lightens up the whole room. It fits nicely into the recipe books of success and gives people quiet permission to continue with their aspirations of “making it” in an industry where in actual fact a lot of people aren’t “making it”.
So the dilemma I ask myself is – when does “truth” become more beneficial than popularity and will anyone actually listen?
